Happening in the Church: with an Universal History Of the same. Wherein is set forth at Large, the whole Race and Course of the Church, .with the Bloody Times, Horrible Troubles, and Great Persecutions against the true Martyrs of Christ. The Ninth Edition. London: for the Company of Stationers, 1684. 3 volumes, very large folio [the bindings are 17 15/16 tall and the text 17 1/2 ], old reversed calf, sometime (probably late 19th/ early 20th century) rebacked, reusing old labels; the rear hinge of volume I is slightly tender; with the initials CC in gilt on all covers; ex-libris the Cheshunt College library, with its bookplates in volumes I & II and with CHESHUNT COLLEGE stamped in red on the titles of volumes I & III and on the first page of text of volume II; the title of volume I is neatly mounted; there is a large piece torn from the blank bottom margin of Uiiii (pp. 235/6), neatly repaired; there is minor marginal worming to the blank bottom outer corner from Ttt5 (p. 777) through the end of the volume; Ffff4 (p. 895), the final leaf is neatly mounted to the blank verso. Volume III: the outer margin of the title is trimmed by about ½ inch; there is a brown spot at the bottom of the bottom margin, c. Ee1-Ff6 pp. 325-348), at first light, then dark and a bit brittle for a few leaves and then lightening again; there is a small paper flaw in Gg5, slightly affecting the copperplate recto and a few letters of text verso; there is a closed tear in Yy1 (pp. 529/30); there is a little light browning & foxing after Zzz1 (p. 817); the text of volume 3 ends on the recto of Cccc6 (p. 863) There follows a title and additional material: A Continuation of the Histories of Forreign Martyrs: From the happy Reign of the most Renowned Queen Elizabeth, to These Times. London: W.R. and S.R. for the Company of Stationers, 1684. This includes material relating to St. Bartholomew s Day in France in 1572, the Spanish Invasion of 1588 and the Gunpowder Treason of 1605. An Index for the whole follows. I: (124) 895 (with a double page plate inserted between C6 & D1 (pp. 36 & 37) titled: A most exact Table of the first Ten Persecutions of the Primitive Church under the Heathen Tyrants of Rome ; and a full page plate between Bb1 & 2 (pp. 290/1) titled: The description of ye poysoning of King Iohn and a double page folding plate between Eeee4 & 5 (pp. 884/5), with a few repairs verso, reading: The Proud Primacy of Popes in order of their rising up from faithfull Bishops & martyrs to become Lords & Governors over Kings & Kingdoms ; II: (1) 551, 131; III: (1) 959 (44)pp Quite a nice set, much larger than most, with wide margins and a crisp & clean text, though the outer margin of volume one is a bit wrinkled (as if at some point it was slightly damp, though without any hint of staining); some copies have a portrait of Fox as a frontispiece, something which is not present in this copy. Also lacking, in Volume II, is the Description of Windsor Castle between Qq6 & Rr1 (pp. 468/9): this clearly has sometime been removed. Volume III has the bookplate of Selina Countess of Huntingdon (& under the College s bookplate the other two volumes may have her bookplate as well). In 1739 Lady Huntingdon joined the Methodist Society meeting in London and spent most of her life aiding to the best of her ability the Evangelical revival, supporting Calvinistic Methodists such as George Whitefield as her chaplains throughout the country. In 1768 she founded a training college for ministers at Trefeca in Wales; shortly after her death it was moved to Hertfordshire and renamed Cheshunt College. Front Glass Bookcase.
