The book of hours was, from the 14th to the 16th centuries, the prayer book that the pious laity used during meditative hours of the day. Only nobles and rich merchants could afford to order such books as were handwritten and illuminated by leading artists. Miniature books of hours were even more uncommon and were reserved for artistic enjoyment as well as religious use. Their decoration includes numerous superb illuminations. Vat. Ross. 94 is distinctive not only for its remarkable beauty and the rich details of its ornamention, but also for its tiny format. It has 80 portraits and 15 plates of miniatures edged in unpolished gold and adorned with designs of flowers, fruit, and animals drawn from life. Shelf.
