He was a hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, memeber of the Academie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, was a prolific cartographer.Jakob van de Schley was a Dutch engraver (this print is from the Dutch edition). He studied under Bernard Picart.This print and others from the same publication were based on the travels of Johan Nieuhof, Dutch traveller and authority on China, and Johann Greuber, the Jesuit missionary, astronomer and explorer who ventured overland from Peking to the Indian State of Goa through Nepal and Tibet.A attractive copperplate engraved hand colouredprint.
