Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort (1744-1803), to whole this work is dedicated, was an English courtier and politician, serving as Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England between 1767 and 1772. Wellins Calcott (1756-1769) was a British Christian author and Freemason. He first published A Candid Disquisition of the Principles and Practices of the Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons in 1769 in London by subscription only. The work is said to have been the means of leading many persons to join the society. According to Freemason encyclopedia, Calcott travelled extensively (also suggested by the range of places where his book was published) and spent time in America. Calcott's work did much to heal the schism between ancient and modern freemasonry that lasted into the early 19th century. There are a list of 405 subscribers included from the Provinces of Massachusetts, New York, Nova Scotia, and Connecticut; as well as the details of three Boston Lodges. Paul Revere (1734-1818) is mentioned as well as fellow rider John Pulling as subscribers from Massachusetts. Extremely rare & important Freemason text with American subscribers. A reading copy despite imperfections. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers RAREA1772MSTX
