The original version of Nicholas Culpeper's (1616-1654) English Physician and Complete Herbal was published in 1652 without any illustrations. In 1790, an illustrated version of the work was produced with drawings done by Ebenezer Sibly (1751- c. 1799). Sibly was classified as an English physician, astrologer, and writer on the occult. As a student of medicine, he became interested in the theories on animal magnetism by Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) joining Mesmer's Harmonic Philosophical School, and later also theosophy. In 1784, Sibly joined the Freemasons. Sibly is best remembered for two books: The Complete Illustration of the Celestial Art of Astrology and The Conjurer's Magazine (the only occult periodical in England). According to Sibly, spirits live in another world that is neither heaven nor hell. Magic can summon only the evil spirit. Good spirits watch over humans, but do not respond to any summoning. Sibly even mentions seven good spirits and seven wicked spirits in his works. As a physician, Sibly creates a tincture which claims "Restoration of Life in Cases of Sudden Death. In all circumstances of suicide, or sudden death, immediate recourse should be had to this medicine, which will not fail to restore life, provided the organs and juices are in a fit disposition for it, which undoubtedly are much oftener than is imagined." As an astrologer, he is said to have used the Placidian system. As a student of alchemy, Sibly translated Bernard of Treviso. Incredibly interesting work in and of itself, with all plates included in the herbal section, and eight out of thirteen plates included in the medical section. WITCH's hand-written notes throughout herbal section. Perfect candidate for restoration (i.e. re-attach front board). RAREB1790GQSX - 12/23 FORN-SHELF-0460-BB-2409-HKREV67.
