1791 Large original antique map titled A Chart of The Isle, Roads and Race of Portland with the Shambles An interesting large engraved map showing the Isle of Portland, the east end of Chesil Beach, Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. The Shambles and the Portland Race are shown offshore. Large Compass Rose. This map was created by the maritime Cartographer, Captain Greenvile Collins. Collins was an officer of the Royal Navy and prominent hydrographer who was commissioned by King Charles II in 1676 and appointed by Samuel Pepys (then secretary to the Admiralty) to charge the Coasts of Great Britain. Condition Central fold as issued. This map is generally age toned and has some surface cracks and tears. We have priced this item based on its condition and if it had been in A1 condition, would have been at least 2 times the price. Overall size including margins 73cm x 51cm.
