Here is a rare theater program flyer from 1886 for James H. Wallick s production of THE BANDIT KING , performed at The Court Street Theatre in Buffalo, New York. The Court St. Theatre was managed by H. R. Jacobs, who had been the manager of a number of theaters and the such, including the General Tom Thumb Museum. James H. Wallick (1839 - 1908, born in Hurley N.Y.) was immensely successful, and popular, being the author of a number of theater dramas. The Bandit King was, by far, his most successful production. It was, in fact, a Wild - West Show, much like that of Buffalo Bill s - complete with horses, buffalos, and acts which included fancy trick shooting. The show revolved around the life of outlaw Jesse James, although the outlaw s name was changed to Joe Howard. Jesse James was as much a celebrity in his time as were Bonnie and Clyde in their era. Audiences must have been thrilled to watch the production , which included a good deal of exciting melodrama. The program is quite scarce. The program is undated, but an old Buffalo Courier newspaper from May 2, 1886 mentioned the show. *************************** This is a single sheet, folded once, vertically, measuring 6 3/4 x 9 1/2 when closed. The sheet is lithographed in green, with lettering and borders in brown. On the front are the particulars of the performance. When opened we find Theatrical News - which has bits of theater gossip and pronouncements ( W. J. Florence says that the only survivors of the best era of the American stage in active life are Joe Jefferson, Lawrence Barrett, Edwin Booth, John Gilbert, Lester Wallack, Mrs. Drew, Charles Pope, and Mr. McVicker.) ( the Violet Cameron English Opera Company will begin their tour of America on October 4, at the Standard Theatre, in Offenbach s the Commodore ) ( Chauncey Olcott, the good-looking minstrel tenor, who declared that he was afraid to kiss Lillian Russell in Pepita that he threw up his position rather than face her husband s gaze, has not gone back to burned cork after although he had a great mind to. ) On the rear exterior is an announcement of the next week s Coming Attraction : Edwin Thorne in the London & New York Sensation, The Black Flag . Published and printed by C. L. Sherrill & Co., Buffalo, New York. *************************** CONDITION : VERY GOOD - On the rear is a small smudge, and a corner crease (which , somehow, seem connected. Also the green ink on the back is faded to an ocher-yellow; the corner crease is just visible on the front; there are, as well a few minute edge nicks, else the program is in exceptional condition. Handle with care! *************************** On the front of the program is a Synopsis of the drama: Monday, May 3d, JAS. H.
