2 A.M.: The Cold War Returns (The Flying Dutchman)

The Cold War never died. It evolved.
2 A.M. — The Cold War Is Back is a geopolitical military thriller about deception, battlefield command, intelligence warfare, and a NATO crisis moving faster than the governments responsible for answering it.

Steve Johnson grew up in the shadow of the first Cold War. His father, Commander Jack Johnson, survived a deadly encounter beneath the Arctic ice in 1988, where one Soviet threat concealed another. Years later, Steve carries that lesson into the U.S. Army, first as an Abrams tanker and later as an intelligence operative trained to question the accepted picture.

While moving through Russia, Steve sees what NATO intelligence has missed. The 4th Guards Tank Brigade is not where Moscow says it is. NATO expects the attack through Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic approaches, while Army Group South is moving toward Moldova and Romania.

Steve sends the warning to the commander he trusts to understand it — General Collier, whose problem is no longer identifying the enemy's intentions but determining whether NATO can react before the opportunity disappears.

NATO has spent years preparing its forces, plans, intelligence systems, and political machinery for a different battlefield. Moldova can be overrun before committees finish meeting, reconnaissance may arrive too late for commanders to react, while requests for authority climb through governments and NATO staffs operating far slower than Russian armor.

The information reaching Collier comes through the Flying Dutchman — an unofficial network linking Jasper van Dijk inside NATO, Claire Rousseau tracing Russian money, Cypher penetrating closed intelligence systems, and Steve providing the judgment of a soldier who knows what an armored formation looks like when it is preparing for war.

Together, they give Collier a picture no single government possesses.

He has enough evidence to understand the danger and enough military power to intervene, but not enough time to wait for the normal process. If he waits, Moldova may fall and Romania may become the next battlefield. If he acts, he must accept responsibility for going farther than any commander around him is prepared to go.

What Collier chooses to do changes the way the battles are led. From 40,000 feet, he brings together intelligence, air power, reconnaissance, cyber operations, and assets no commander before him has controlled this way, allowing fresh intelligence to alter the battle almost as quickly as it is discovered.

Behind the Russian advance, General Markov and the Perun Initiative have spent years shaping military decisions, moving money beyond Kremlin control, manipulating intelligence, and building influence inside institutions meant to answer to Moscow. Their deception keeps NATO focused north while Army Group South moves toward the southern flank.

For Steve, the crisis is personal. His history with GRU officer Anya Kuznetsova places him beside someone capable of exposing Markov's network from within, while Katya Belikova remains the woman around whom he has built the life he hopes the war will allow him to keep.

As Russian armor advances, the Flying Dutchman feeds Collier intelligence quickly enough to change decisions in real time, while Black Sea operations, strategic air power, and the threat of tactical nuclear weapons alter the battlefield around him.

When it is over, Russia is left in shambles but capable of rebuilding after Markov's assets are frozen, the Flying Dutchman has helped force a tenuous peace, and the United States announces that it will leave NATO.

The Cold War may have returned, but the alliance that enters the next crisis will not be the one that fought this one.

Mark Wilder is a retired U.S. Army First Sergeant and Abrams Tank Commander who spent part of his military career patrolling the border traces of the inner German frontier during the Cold War. His boots have touched ground across Germany, Japan, the U.S., and Australia - but today he writes while he also pursues his passion for gardening. An enthusiast of modern warfare fiction, geopolitics, and the spycraft that shaped a generation, Wilder draws inspiration from the sharp realism of Clancy, Coyle, Ludlum, and DeMille. 2 A.M. marks the explosive beginning of The Flying Dutchman series - born from Cold War memory, battlefield precision, and the soundtrack of a world that never truly stood down.
