From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6?The theme of Case's book is a child's very first awareness of being defined both as "coloured" and also as illegitimate during the '60s in South Africa, when many apartheid measures were being initiated. Because awakenings come to children slowly, often through uncomprehended snatches of conversation, the story seems slow and sometimes confusing. It takes until well into the book to discover, with some relief, that Katie, the narrator, is only six. Up to then, readers assume that she is a very naive and immature girl about the age of the target audience. On some subjects, fuller context is provided, but this is accomplished by more detailed narration in more complex language, so the consistency of the child's voice is to some extent sacrificed. Plot development is hazy and lacks suspense. Adults who know a little about South Africa will see the significance of the shiny new coins and the increasing instances in which Katie, in the midst of typical activities, bumps up against racial laws. But not many Americans of the target age are likely to be able to put the pieces together enough to sense what's going on. Nor will they easily identify with Katie. This novel provides a warm-hearted picture of what family and community life was like for a young black child growing into an awareness of discrimination, but its readership here will not be large.?Loretta Kreider Andrews, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore
