From the introduction: ".the compiler decided that - despite the quantity of material involved - it would be a sensible plan to indicate not just the publication details of the books but also the number and kind of illustrations in them. The lack of a completely acceptable terminology and the difficulty of determining precise details about the methods by which illustrations have been prepared have hampered progress but it is nonetheless hoped that the list will prove useful to those who wish to know more of the work of a great artist.
