Billy longs for packed lunches like those his friend Decklan gets. But not because he’s jealous of the food Decklan gets, but of the little surprise ‘lovey notes’ he gets tucked into his sandwich box.

Billy gets free school lunches, but what he really wants is packed lunches like his best friend Decklan... but not because of Decklan’s food, because of the surprise notes he finds in his lunchbox every day – notes his Mum writes him; slushy notes, funny notes! Soon the other kids in the class get surprise notes too, in their lunchboxes. Billy desperately wants a lunchbox plus notes from his Mum. Not only to show she loves him, but because he doesn’t want to be different from the other kids. His Mum gives in and lets him have a packed lunch, not only it is in a grotty old ice-cream container, but there aren’t any notes inside. So Billy starts to write his own... and they get more and more fantastic, with little pictorgrams and quizzes on them much to the envy of the other kids.

All is resolved in the end in this lovely warm ‘familiar situation’ story from a renowned storyteller.
