Although written more than a hundred years ago, this "foresees not only organ transplants but also . the use of mental hospitals as prisons and the manipulation of the news media." A title in Macmillan's "Best of Soviet SF" series with an introduction by Theodore Sturgeon, who comments that Beliaev was writing at the same time as Weird Tales was transforming US science fiction. Translated from the Russian by Antonina W. Bouis.
