Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Ah yes. The Hobbit. That modest little walking holiday that escalated. Published here in 1973 by Unwin (ISBN: 0048230707), this is Tolkien before franchises, before cinematic trilogies, before collectible replica swords were socially acceptable. Just a pipe-smoking Oxford don quietly unleashing dragons upon the world. Bilbo Baggins is minding his own business ? a noble pastime ? when a wizard with questionable boundary awareness turns up with thirteen dwarves and a plan involving a dragon, a mountain, and what can only be described as extremely poor risk assessment. What follows is a tale of reluctant heroism, pocket handkerchiefs, subterranean riddling competitions, and one very small piece of jewellery that later causes significant administrative difficulties. This 1973 Unwin edition comes from that golden era when fantasy books looked slightly serious, slightly academic, and faintly like something you?d find shelved between Anglo-Saxon poetry and a guide to damp-proofing. It smells faintly of the 1970s ? not in a bad way, more in a ?someone read this by a coal fire while listening to prog rock? way. Condition: Fair. Which in Hobbit terms probably means it has travelled a little. Perhaps metaphorically through Mirkwood. Perhaps physically through a schoolbag in 1981. There may be the usual signs of age ? edge wear, gentle creasing, the soft patina of having actually been read. Unlike many modern fantasy epics that are purchased aspirationally and left untouched. The text, however, remains as sharp as Sting when goblins are nearby. Tolkien?s prose is deceptively simple, quietly mischievous, and utterly confident. He writes as though he knows you?ll follow him into a cave full of trolls and you absolutely will. There are songs. There are maps. There are moments of unexpected tenderness. And there is, of course, Smaug ? literature?s most articulate arsonist. Owning this edition feels less like acquiring a book and more like adopting a small piece of literary history. It is not pristine. It has lived. Which feels appropriate, given that its protagonist spends most of the story trying not to. If you?ve somehow missed Middle-earth, this is the gateway. If you haven?t, this is a charming 1970s reminder of where the trouble began. Available, slightly road-worn but entirely magical, from Crappy Old Books ? where adventures continue, even if the covers are a little frayed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 5853

hardcover. Zustand: Acceptable. Please see the condition note after this for details, if this is missing please consider Acceptable to mean poor quality that could include major staining, water damage, writing, missing dustjacket, etc etc. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
