Robert Lawrence Stine, 1943 geboren, entdeckte bereits mit neun Jahren seine Liebe zum Schreiben. Seit 1965 lebt er in New York City, wo er zunächst als Lektor tätig wurde. Seine ersten Bücher waren im Bereich Humor angesiedelt. Seit 1986 hat sich R. L. Stine, jedoch ganz den Gruselgeschichten verschrieben. 1992 kam für ihn mit der Kindergruselserie "Gänsehaut" der ganz große und weltweite Erfolg. Die Zeitung USA Today hat 1999 ermittelt, dass er der erfolgreichste Kinderbuchautor aller Zeiten ist.
