Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

A son of Italian immigrants, Louis Zamperini got his first taste of fame when he set the world high school record in the mile run. At the age of 19 he qualified to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics by tying the world record holder in the 5000 meter run; he placed eighth at the Olympics. In 1938, he set the national collegiate mile record while attending USC. He was primed to be one of the favorites to win at the 1940 Olympics in Tokyo, but it was cancelled due to the start of WWII. At the peak of his career, Zamperini left the world of sports to fight for his country as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Forces. When his B-24 crashed over the Pacific Ocean in 1943, he was stranded at sea for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war for over two years. After surviving the unthinkable, he returned to the United States to found the Victory Boys Camp for wayward youth and to work as an inspirational speaker around the world. He has been the subject not only of his own autobiography, DEVIL AT MY HEELS, but also of the multi-million-copy bestselling biography UNBROKEN by Laura Hillenbrand and its 2014 film adaptation directed by Angelina Jolie. Now 97 years old, he lives in California.
