Thb object of this volume is to famish the reader with material for estimating the characteristics and influence of Plato theM ythologist, or Prophet, as distinguished from Plato theD ialectician, orB easoner. In order to effect this special object within a reasonable space, it was necessary to extract theM yths from theD ialogues in which they occur, with only the shortest possible indication of the Context in each case, and to confine theO bservations to theM yths as individual pieces and as a series The reader, therefore, must not expect to find in theO bservations on, say, the Phaedo Myth or the Phaedrus Myth aS tudy of the Phaedo or the Phaedrus. The Greek text printed opposite the Translations and followed by them throughout, except in a few places where preferred readings are given in footnotes, is that of Stallbaum sP latonis Opera Omnia Uho Volumine Comprehensa (1867). I owe a laie debt of gratitude to two friends for help received. Professor J. S. Phillimore read all the Translations through in proof with the most friendly care; and errors which may be detected in these Translations will, I feel sure, turn out to be in places where, from some cause or other, I may have failed to make proper use of his suggestions. The other friend who helped me, Frederick York Powell, is gone.

Vain Fortune as a new book: for it is a new book. The first edition was kindly noticed, but it attracted little attention, and very rightly, for the story as told therein was thin and insipid; and when Messrs. Scribner proposed to print the book in A merica, I stipulated that I should be allowed to rewrite it. They consented, and I began the story withE mily Watson, making her the principal character instead of Hubert Price. Some months after I received a letter fromM adam Couperus, offering to translate theE nglish edition into Dutch. I sent her the American edition, and asked her which she would prefer to translate from.
