Friedman, an environmental and social psychologist, looks at diverse aspects of the city--the history of zoning, skyscraper architecture, how people interact on city streets, etc. The "moves" of the title are exercises which focus the reader on an aspect of urban life, a concept not particularly successful, but one that serves as a way to bring together information from a variety of sources. This is designed for nonspecialists who simply want to know more about what makes a city tick. They might want to move on to the readable works of Kevin Lynch's Image of the City (MIT Pr., 1960), William Whyte's City: Rediscovering Its Center ( LJ 2/1/84), and Jane Jacobs's Death & Life of Great American Cities (Random, 1961). Recommended for public libraries in urban areas.
