Despite its title, only one-third of this book is devoted to emergencies. It is padded with sections on growth, development, and feeding, topics which are better covered in other books. However, the presentation is practical and the information is specific and sound, for the most part. Kaplan provides emergency treatment flow charts and includes valuable sections on accident prevention. Superior in layout and accessibility is The Parent's Guide to Baby and Child Medical Care, edited by Terril H. Hart (Meadowbrook, 1982).
