This is the first computer organization text aimed specifically at computer science students (as opposed to books which are for CS/EE/and Computer Engineering). It has a "topdown" approach meaning the author starts with the software or user aspects of the organization then explains how to make it work. This is versus "bottom-up," wherein the student sees logic gates, circuits, etc., all of which are built up to user level.

Intended for the sophomore course in Computer Organization aimed specifically at computer science students, "Computer Organizations" takes a top down approach (general to specific) that will revolutionize this course. The book uses a "top down approach" meaning the author starts with the software or user apsects of the organizations then works its way down to progressively smaller components, a much more logical approach for computer science students. Targeted to fit the new ACM/IEEE Curriculum Guidelines for 1991. Careful use of assembly language pseudocode keeps students focused. Scragg uses assembly language as a vehicle for learning about computer organization - not as an end unto itself. A generic approach to hardware keeps the focus of the course on concepts, not the workings of specific machines. Students leave the course with an understanding of computer organization that is transferable to machines encountered in the lab or in industry. "Food for Thought" questions are interspersed throughout text to suggest questions about material that will be covered later. In addition to short exercises found at the end of chapters, Scragg has included three larger projects in appendix 2. All chapters have both an introductory overview of the problems which will be addressed and a terminating summary listing important concepts introduced in answer to the problems.
