by Patricio A.A. Lauro and Diana V. Bambill, Department of Engineering -- CONICET, Universidad Nacional del Sur, 8000, Bahia Blanca, ARGENTINA This extremely valuable Handbook provides a very complete, up-to-date coverage of known solutions to an important variety of vibration problems of elastic deformable continuous systems. The authors attempt to provide information not available in currently used handbooks. The reviewers feel that Drs. I.A. Karnovsky and O. I. Lebed have reached successfully their goal, having consulted sources published in the USA, Canada, UK, Russia, Germany, Japan, Israel and the Netherlands in the last 40 years. An interesting feature is the fact that in Chapter 1, and when discussing beam theories the authors begin with equations of elasticity in terms of average values discussing different assumptions denoting a more scientific approach than the one used in most well known handbooks. On the other hand, the authors indicate that the course is intended for a course in Structural Dynamics. In this case it should be complemented with another good textbook and certainly, a modern course must also cover, at least, foundations of the finite element method, the boundary element technique, etc. It would have been useful if the Handbook had contained a Chapter or an Appendix with a listing and a short description of modern, commercial finite element codes. The Handbook will also be useful in courses dealing with mechanical vibrations, active control of vibrating elements, etc. The book covers: transverse vibrations equations; methods of analysis; fundamental equations of classical beam theory; special functions for the dynamic analysis of beams andframes; treatment of Bernoulli-Euler beams with classical and non-classical boundary conditions; beams with attached masses; beams on elastic foundation; multispan beams; beams under axial loads; Bress-Timoshenko and non-uniform beams; optical design; nonlinear problems; [and] arches and frames. Plates and shells are not treated in this handbook. The reviewers feel that this Handbook will be very useful to undergraduate and graduate students and practicing ocean, naval, civil and mechanical engineers.
Reseña del editor:
* This information-rich reference book provides solutions to the architectural problem of vibrations in beams, arches and frames in bridges, highways, buildings and tunnels * A must-have for structural designers and civil engineers, especially those involved in the seismic design of buildings * Well-organized into problem-specific chapters, and loaded with detailed charts, graphs, and necessary formulas
