Ricki Lewiss career communicating science began with earning a Ph.D. in Genetics from Indiana University in 1980. It quickly blossomed into writing for newspapers and magazines and writing the introductory textbook Life. Since then, she has taught a variety of life science courses and has authored the textbook Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications and books about gene therapy, stem cells, and scientific discovery. She is a genetic counselor for a large medical practice, teaches a graduate online course in "Genethics" at Albany Medical College, and writes for Medscape Medical News, Genetic Literacy Project, Rare Disease Report, and medical journals. Ricki also writes the popular DNA Science blog at Public Library of Science and is a frequent public speaker.
Douglas Gaffin holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and he earned his Ph.D. in zoology from Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1994. Doug is currently Dean of University College and associate professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oklahoma.
Mariï¿lle Hoefnagels is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology at the University of Oklahoma, where she teaches courses in introductory biology, mycology, and science writing. She has received the University of Oklahoma General Education Teaching Award and the Longmire Prize (the Teaching Scholars Award from the College of Arts and Sciences). She has also been awarded honorary memberships in several student honor societies. Dr. Hoefnagels received her BS in environmental science from the University of California at Riverside, her MS in soil science from North Carolina State University, and her PhD in plant pathology from Oregon State University. Her dissertation work focused on the use of bacterial biological control agents to reduce the spread of fungal pathogens on seeds. In addition to authoring Biology: The Essentials and Biology: Concepts and Investigations, her recent publications have focused on creating investigative teaching laboratories and integrating technology into introductory biology classes. She also maintains a blog on teaching nonmajors biology, and she frequently gives presentations on study skills and related topics to student groups across campus.
Bruce Parker received his Ph.D. in molecular biology/biochemistry from Utah State University in 1988. He has taught general biology for nonmajors and majors at Utah Valley State College since 1992.
