Since the 1970s, Europe has been consistently afflicted by terrorism. Recent positive political-military developments - the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, the democratization of Eastern Europe - have not diminished the threat of terrorism, and many of the outstanding roots of regional conflicts, like the Arab-Israeli confrontation, remain intact. Moreover, new dangers are being created by the forces of nationalism and ethnic assertiveness unleashed in the Soviet Union and elsewhere. As Europe moves towards economic and political unification, the region without frontiers might offer new security vulnerabilities, or, on the other hand, the new Europe could provide incentives for increased counter-terrorist cooperation. This latest volume in Brassey's Terrorism Library examines the current and future terrorist trends in Europe and what the international community can and should do to cope with the challenges.
