Aimed at engineering students and professionals working in the field of mechanics of space flight, this book examines space tether systems - one of the most forward-thinking directions of modern astronautics. The main advantage of this technology is the simplicity, profitability and ecological compatibility: space tethers allow the execution of various manoeuvers in orbit without costs of jet fuel due to the use of gravitational and electromagnetic fields of the Earth. This book will acquaint the reader with the modern state of the space tether's dynamics, with specific attention on the research projects of the nearest decades. Professor Vladimir S. Aslanov graduated from the Kuibyshev Aviation Institute, Kuibyshev, USSR (KuAI) in 1972 as a specialty Aircraft Engineer. In 1974 he entered postgraduate school of the Kuibyshev Aviation Institute and in 1977 received his PhD. In the period 1978-1982 Aslanov worked as an assistant professor in the KuAI. In 1990 he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Moscow Aviation Institute, Moscow/USSR, on the motion of a rigid body in the atmosphere. Since 1989 Prof. Aslanov is the head of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics of Samara State Aerospace University, Samara, Russia. Prof. Aslanov’s scientific interests are classical mechanics, nonlinear oscillations and chaotic dynamics, mechanics of space flight, dynamics of gyrostats, dynamics
of tethered satellite systems and spacecraft stability.
