On 1 July 1874, fou?-yea old Charley Ross was playing outside his home in the fashionable Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when two strange men lifted him into a wagon and carried him away. Three days later, on 4 July, Christian K. To this point in America's history, the kidnapping of a child for ransom was unheard of and it wasn't until the 1 920s that such a crime was committed again. The Ross case came, therefore, as a sudden and unexpected shock-to the family, the citizens of Philadelphia, the Press and (above all) the police, whose antiquated detective methods proved totally inadequate. Thanks to thorough and painstaking research, the author has unearthed the extraordinary sequence of events, the bizarre correspondence between the frantic father and the kidnappers, the scandalous attacks on the suffering family by irresponsible newspapers, the slow and unfruitful steps taken by the inefficient police, the hundred-andone false trails, the rush of claimants throughout the country to be the missing child, and the climax of the dramatic events which solved the mystery of the kidnapping without revealing the fate of little Charley Ross.
