Recording her involvement as a war correspondent, this book covers Lee Miller's account of being the only woman combat photographer to follow the Allied advance across Western Europe in World War II. She tells her story in words and pictures, from a field hospital behind Omaha Beach in Normandy, July 1944, to the burning of Berchtesgaden in 1945. From a fashion model for "Vogue" in the 1920s after being discovered by Conde Nast, she moved to France and was apprentice and muse to the Surrealist and photographer Man Ray. After becoming established as a major fashion photographer throughout the 1930s, she met Roland Penrose, the painter and chronicler of the Surrealist movement and moved to London. Sent by "Vogue" to cover an evacuation hospital in Normandy, she went rn to photograph and write about the war in Europe, producing a collection of photographs which include coverage of the siege of St Malo, the surrender of 20,000 German troops on the Loire, the fighting front near Luxembourg, Alsace, the Red Army on the Elbe, and the Dachau concentration camp into which she was one of the first photographers to enter. Anthony Penrose, is Lee Miller's son and also wrote "The Lives of Lee Miller". David E Scherman was a combat photographer from 1941-1945 who worked with Lee Miller and is the author and editor of "The Best of Life".
