Inhaltsangabe

While conventional medicine has disease as its focus, integrated medicine concentrates on the powers of the body that promote health. Central to Dr Ali's philosophy is this concept of self-help and the fact that 80 per cent of illness can be cured without drugs. He believes the majority of illnesses are caused by the emotional, psychological and physical strain we put ourselves under. The Integrated Health Bible shows you how to reverse this by helping the body heal itself and to restore vitality and well-being. This is done by following the Lifestyle Programme, which consists of a regimen of diet, exercise, yoga, relaxation and meditation. And for when things go wrong, there is a diagnosis and treatment programme for up to 40 common ailments - including asthma, back problems, infertility, migraine, sinusitis and stress - combining specific treatments (such as homeopathy, acupuncture, ayurveda), exercises and tips for each problem.

The Common Cold

They say that medical science has made such great technological advances that a surgeon in London can remove the gall bladder of a patient in Sydney through telemedicine. Yet it has not been able to find a cure for r the common cold. Conventional medicine knows it is some sort of a virus so all one can do is hope for the body to heal on its own, as in flu. As mentioned earlier, the curing of the common cold on its own is a clear example of the sanogenetic powers or healing force of the body. The seven-day rule applies to this too. There is nothing a doctor can do to treat the virus, but the body has its own tactics for dealing with it.

The most important fact behind a common cold is that the body is always run down before it catches a cold. When you catch a 'chill' by exposure to cold air, air-conditioning, getting wet (especially in the head) and so on, the body's energy is wasted in warming it up. As a result of that there is an acute loss of the 'inner heat' and the body gears up its resources to compensate for that. This makes the immune system vulnerable. Opportunistic viruses, present in abundance in the air, then try to enter the body through the nasal passage where they begin to thrive.

In a defensive reaction the mucus in the nose increases to 'wash' the virus out. The wrestling match between the pathogenetic force (the virus) and the sanogenetic powers (shown in the mucus discharge) is in fill swing. In most cases the body wins and the virus is eliminated. If the body loses the virus penetrates deeper into the throat, sinuses and lungs, causing inflammation of these organs. There is however, no fever as in flu.

Treatment

The most sensible thing to do in this case is to help the body to eliminate the virus. Stopping the cold with antihistamine or nasal sprays that constrict blood vessels to stop fluid filtering through them, is not a good idea, however convenient it might be for the patient. Here are some tips on treatment.

Diet Avoid the following: Cold water or chilled drinks (warm drinks like herbal tea or warm water help to eliminate the cold) Dairy products - they increase mucus production Fungal products - mushrooms and cheese

Try the following Ginger and black pepper tea Boil a few slices of fresh ginger with a pinch of black pepper for four to five minutes. Add a few drops of lemon and drink with a little organic honey. Anit-cold soup Chop onion, ginger, leek a bit of garlic and some potatoes. Boil these in water for 20-25 minutes. Add a bit of mustard paste, black pepper, salt and a few drops of lemon. (You can also use fresh chicken stock or bone marrow stock to prepare this soup.) Drink it twice a day. After drinking this soup your body will warm up and you might sweat in the forehead. Brandy with honey A teaspoon of brandy and honey in a cup of warm water at bedtime is useful.

Other treatments Nose drops Sniff equal quantities of mustard and pure sesame oils or use Dr Ali's sinus oil. Put one drop of this mixture of oils in each nostril and sniff up. Do this twice a day. Mustard has a powerful antibacterial property and possibly some antiviral property. High does of vitamin C 500mg, two to three times a day for five days Homoeopathic remedies See a physician or try Ferrum phos, Aconite 30 or Gelsemium 30. Take one tablet three times a day for three days.

Prognosis

If the cold is treated as soon as it starts (with sneezing or a running nose) then the secondary complications (sinusitis, pharyngitis) do not set in. It is good to have a cold every now and then. It gives you a chance to pay attention to your body.
