The dramatic change in the British industrial scene since 1980, with many traditional industries declining and new industries becoming established, has affected the way in which hundreds of thousands of British workers are employed. At the same time the unions which represent many of them have been deeply affected both by a significant fall in their membership levels and in the way in which they are entitled to operate under the law. This enquiry examines the future role trade unions might have in the British economy. Oral evidence was taken from 25 organizations including the TUC and individuals both within and outside the TUC as well as the Federation of Managerial, Professional and General Associations. The employers' point of view was represented both collectively by the CBI, the Institute of Directors, the Engineering Employers Federation, the Institute of Personnel Management and the Chemical Industries Association and individually by organizations including Wandsworth Borough Council, Rover Group and Reed Elsevier. Volume II, "Minutes of Evidence", (ISBN 0 10 02106434 5) and Volume III, "Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence" (ISBN 0 10 021054 6) are also available.
