Waste-to-Resource System Design for Low-Carbon Circular Economy equips the user with the necessary knowledge to carry out the preliminary design and optimization of economically viable and environmentally friendly waste-to-resource systems. This book covers the state-of-the-art development of technologies and processes in terms of six types of bioresources (i.e. energy, biohydrogen, biomethane, bioethanol, biodiesel, and biochar) that are recoverable from waste. The focused technologies and processes, such as anaerobic digestion, fermentation, pyrolysis, gasification, and transesterification are being widely applied-or have the potential to be used-towards sustainable waste management. It also covers the methods needed for the design and optimization of waste-to-resource systems, i.e., multiobjective optimization, cost-benefit analysis, and life cycle assessment, as well as systematic and representative databases on the parameters of the processes, costs, and the advantages and disadvantages of technologies. Finally, the book adopts a problem-based method to facilitate audiences to quickly gain the knowledge and skill of designing and optimizing waste-to-resource systems.

Dr. Siming You, Senior Lecturer in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow, UK, specialises in the design and analysis of environmental and energy systems with a focus on water treatment and waste management systems. Before joining the School, he worked as a Research Fellow at NUS (National University of Singapore) Environmental Research Institute. He also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Nanyang Technological University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Dr. You received his Ph.D. in Thermo-fluids from Nanyang Technological University in 2014. Dr. You was awarded the Outstanding Young Researcher Award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), SLS in 2018. Dr You has published more 100 papers in top-tier journals including Science, Bioresource Technology, Journal of Hazardous Materials, etc.
Waste-to-Resource System Design for Low-carbon Circular Economy equips the user with all the necessary knowledge to carry out preliminary design and optimisation of economically viable and environmentally friendly waste-to-resource systems. The book covers the state-of-the-art development of technologies and processes (anaerobic digestion, fermentation, pyrolysis, and gasification) that are being widely applied or can potentially be widely used toward sustainable waste management. It introduces the fundamentals and mechanisms of the different technologies and processes that are most relevant to the design and optimisation of waste-to-resource systems. The book covers the methods that are needed for the design and optimisation of waste-to-resource systems, i.e. multi-objective optimisation, cost-benefit analysis, and life cycle assessment as well as provides systematic and representative databases on the parameters of the processes, costs, and environmental impacts, and advantages and disadvantages of different waste-to-resource systems. Finally the book adopts a problem-based method to guide audiences to design and optimise waste-to-resource systems by providing realistic case studies.
