PREFACE The material in this book was developed from a set of class notes prepared for an elementary course in analysis of variance. It was written primarily for students who are not well prepared in either statistics or mathematics. An attempt has been made to present as many necessary concepts as possible without resorting to the use of advanced mathematics. Although some of the formulas may appear to be quite formidable, the mathematics needed does not involve anything beyond that found in a modest college algebra course. Perseverance and a mature attitude are apt to be greater assets than a large collection of sophisticated mathematical techniques. Minimum prerequisites for the course should probably be (a) one semester of college mathematics and (b) a reasonably good one-semester (pre-calculus) statistics course covering statistical inference. Since some experience with statistical inference is assumed, Chapter 1 is intended to be mainly a review. Consequently, the treatment of many of the topics included there is fairly brief. The discussion of the various statistical tests gradually leads to some simple analysis of variance situations. Numerical examples are frequent in Chapter 2. Since many of the formulas and techniques presented there require minor modifications in order to fit the situations described in later chapters, the number of numerical illustrations decreases as one proceeds through the book. Needless to say, a desk calculator is indispensable to solve the numerical problems. These machines are well adapted to do the many arithmetic operations that are required in each analysis. Although no attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive bibliography of the field, references that students may find helpful are listed at the end of the chapters...
