Fred B. Chernow is the principal of an elementary school on Staten Island, New York. He has conducted in-service courses for teachers as well as seminars for business and professional leaders in letter writing and communication skills. He is an adjunct professor at St. John's University.
Here's a unique time-saving collection of over 300 model letters and memos, specifically designed to help elementary principals communicate their ideas more effectively to students, parents, teachers, other school staff, and the wider community.
For easy use, each letter and memo is printed on a separate page, enabling you to copy it or make minor alterations to fit your situation. And, to convey your message with maximum impact, many letters contain lively reproducible artwork that you can use, eliminate, or easily transfer from one page to another with just a pair of scissors or tape.
The Kit is conveniently organized into six sections, each focusing on a particular type of communication needed for different audiences; for example:
Section 1, Parents, provides you with 115 letters, including policy statements on homework, warning letters on failing grades, thank-you letters of various types, and a notice of violation of school rules.
Section 2, Pupils, includes 40 models ranging from academic contracts to yearbooks, including dress codes, honor rolls, bus safety, a summer reading list, vandalism, and other current topics.
Section 3, Teachers, give you 70 letters both to individuals and the entire faculty, including general statements, curriculum, lesson plans, classroom appearance, substitute teachers, evaluation, referral of students, and personal letters of recommendation and sympathy.
Section 4, Other staff members, contains 29 model letters and memos to improve your techniques of administration and delegation in dealing with the custodian, school secretary, guidance counselor, paraprofessional, nurse, and others.
Section 5, Special events, provides 35 letters and memos that enhance your ability to provide and publicize all kinds of contests, school fairs, award programs, and a collection of special events for each month of the school year.
Section 6, The community, includes 22 letters and memos covering such topics as the alumni association, community volunteers, applications to foundations and corporations, school pictures, Special Olympics, and the spring concert.
Covering virtually every school situation, these sample communications will not only help you write messages that spark immediate attention and cheerful compliance, but also save you hours of writing time, prevent communication problems, and improve your image as well as your school's.
