Recent books and movies, as well as the forthcoming quincentennial of Columbus's "discovery" of America have heightened social awareness of Native Americans. Gattuso, a veteran travel writer, commissioned essays from Native American authors in producing a book that is part cultural journey, part travel guide, and part photographic extravaganza. The travel section, which comprises the bulk of the book, emphasizes the West and Southwest. It offers a selective guide to communities, ceremonies, trading posts, powwows, games, and historic places and events. The commentary on rules of appropriate behavior for visitors is particularly valuable. Recommended for all libraries with an active travel section.
