PreSchool-Grade 1 Molly, an enthusiastic, appealing, button-eyed tot with spiky black hair, marches cheerfully through two familiar childhood events. In Molly she is admonished gently by her father to wash, tuck in her blouse, and get herself ready for nursery school. Once there she has a splendid time painting, tricycle-riding, singing, and so on. When, disheveled and daubed with paint, she returns home, her dad gives her a big hug because he can see what a good time she has had. In Molly Goes Hiking she decides to take a vigorous walk with her new day pack stuffed with a picnic lunch. The woods and mountains she explores are actually the bushes and rock garden of her own yard, but she feels happily triumphant when she returns to her house and welcoming mother. The jaunty watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations show a pleasantly untidy child in high-topped green tennis shoes enjoying life fully. The warm, comfortable mood of both text and pictures reflects a sensitivity to the young child's need to participate in new experiences within safe and acceptable limits. Short, very simple sentences make these books easy readers, but the interest level would be on the lower end of the preschool/first-grade spectrum. Molly's morning routine is arduoustying her shoes, tucking in her blouse, washing her face, zipping her jacket and leaving her bear at home. She's quite presentable when she gets to class, but it doesn't last. After throwing herself into the day's activities, Molly arrives home disheveled but extremely contented. And who could yell at even the messiest small girl, when she's had such an obviously busy, happy day? Molly's a charmer, all right, and McCully adds bright paint smudges, trailing shirt tails and a couple of cowlicks to bring the point home. Thin but pleasant. Ages 37.
