This volume is drawn from the years when George Orwell began to explore the life of the poor, and was struggling to establish himself as a novelist and factual reporter. Disillusioned with communism in Spain, rejected from service in World War II, he faced hostilities in a mood of frustration.

His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which brought him world-wide fame.
