The life of Fanny Trollope, one of Dickens' greatest literary rivals, combines celebrity and popularity with misfortune and tragedy. When Fanny Milton married the young barrister Thomas Anthony Trollope she expected a life of conventional domesticity. But her husband's mismanagement led to financial ruin and in an attempt to rescue the family's fortunes, Fanny and three of her children embarked on a voyage to America. She turned her pen to many controversial subjects, including the Industrial Revolution in Manchester and slavery in the USA. It was there, stranded and destitute, that she began DOMESTIC MANNERS OF THE AMERICANS, a book which caused a furore and launched her literary career, and remains a classic to this day.
