George Chapman (1559-1634) emerged as a poet in 1594 and then as a dramatist in 1596. He was associated with a group of 'freethinkers' that included Sir Walter Ralegh & Christopher Marlowe. He was friends with Ben Jonson and is best remembered for The Whole Works of Homer, referred to by Keats in On first looking into Chapman's Homer.
Jonathan Hudston works as journalist for BBC South West.

Buchbeschreibung Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Scarce, as George Chapman's books have always been, with the possible exception of his translations of Homer (those helped massively by the advocacy of John Keats). A shame, because as T S Eliot several times argued, Chapman was "a very great poet and dramatist", with a fascinating texture, density and flavour. This Penguin edition remains the best general introduction to his works. It incudes a comedy (All Fools), a tragi-comedy (The Widow's Tears), a tragedy (Bussy D'Ambois), several poems (Hymnus in Noctem, Ovid's Banquet of Sense, De Guiana, To M.Harriots, The Tears of Peace, A good woman), and 55,000 words of introduction, essays and notes, in which many points are made you will find nowhere else, for example about Chapman's use of Latin materials contributed by the Italian scholar Franco Basso. This copy has been kept in a box since publication and has never been read. However, its condition is described only as "very good" since during its long cardboard incarceration, it's picked up a few spots and has browned slightly around the edges, plus the glue at the very bottom of the spine has got blackened from some sort of rubbing. At the top it's still white, and the book is otherwise in excellent condition. Please take a look at the photos supplied, and note finally that the texts are largely in their original spelling, though with some modernisation. Get your eye in for this and it's very rewarding.
