On December 7, 1941, Americans were shocked to hear that Pearl Harbor had been devastated by a Japanese air raid. Theodore Taylor looks at Japanese intelligence work and at the American anti-intelligence efforts, which were often careless or ineffective. But once the raid was launched, bravery abounded--on both sides.

Grade 5-8-- An old standard of the World War II genre makes a new appearance with a slight face-lift. Taylor has revised his account of the attack on Pearl Harbor by basically rewriting the first chapter and changing the entire volume from the present tense to a much easier-to-read past tense. Now in paperback, the typeset is a little smaller. The charcoal illustrations of the earlier edition (HarperCollins, 1971; o.p.) have been replaced by three black-and-white maps. The text gives an in-depth look at the conditions of the time, allowing readers to better understand why this event took place. A listing of the key figures and an author's note are appended. Libraries that do not have the original title should give definite consideration to this one. --Eldon Younce, Harper Elem . School, KS

Trade Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 6th Printing. 179 Pages. Reprint of the 1971 Edition. Tight straight book with no marks or stamps. Minor cover edge wear. On December 7, 1941, Americans were shocked to hear that Pearl Harbor had been devastated in a Japanese air raid. The harbor was believed invulnerable because of its isolation and the highly developed security net surrounding it. Theodore Taylor looks at Japanese intelligence work and at American anti-intelligence efforts, which were often careless or ineffective. He shows that although the United States possessed advanced technology such as radar and Purple, a top-secret code breaker, the information gathered was often discarded or misclassified. But once the raid was launched, bravery abounded-on both sides. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12770
