CATHY DAY grew up in Peru, Indiana, once the winter homem of several circuses. One of her great-uncles was the world’s fastest ticket taker, another was an elephant trainer. She lives in Ewing, New Jersey, and teaches at The College of New Jersey.

CATHY DAY was born in Peru, Indiana, the winter home of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus at the turn of the century. She received her MFA from the University of Alabama and currently teaches at the University of Pittsburgh. She lives in Pennsylvania.

Barnum war nichts weiter als ein Kurzwarenhändler - bis er für 1000 Dollar eine Schwarze kaufte und das Geld schnell wieder hereinbekam, indem er sie als George Washingtons hunderteinundsechzigjährige Amme zur Schau stellte. Barnums Partner James Bailey hieß eigentlich Jimmy McGinnis und war ein Waisenkind, ein Hotelpage, bevor er sich in einen Strategen des Zirkus verwandelte, in einen Mann, der den Quartiermeistern der Armee vormachte, wie man Menschen und Material in großen Mengen per Bahn transportierte. Bevor es Züge gab, reisten Zirkusse mit Flussbooten und Pferdewagen (und wurden aus einleuchtenden Gründen "Schlammshows" genannt). Wären die Schaufelräder und hohen Schornsteine nicht gewesen, dann wären die Brüder Al, Alf, Charles, John und Otto Rungeling vielleicht irgendwo in Iowa Sattler geworden wie ihr Vater. Doch eines Morgens im Jahr 1870 erblickten sie am Ufer des Mississippi Elefanten, die über den Landungssteg von Bord eines Zirkusschiffes gingen, wurden von Begeisterung ergriffen und waren fortan die Ringling Brothers, Besitzer (zusammen mit Barnum and Bailey) der Größten Show der Welt. Viele Jahre lang war der Great Porter Circus ihr schärfster Konkurrent. Er gehörte einem gewissen Wallace Porter, einem ehemaligen Offizier der Unionskavallerie. Nach der Schlacht bei Appomattox wendete Porter sein teuer erworbenes Wissen über Pferde im Familiengeschäft an und war mit achtunddreißig der größte Mietstallbesitzer in Nord-Indiana. Wie er Zirkusbesitzer wurde, ist eine ganz andere Geschichte.
