Whenever the birthday book was on display for classes or visiting groups, it became an object of fascination. Thus was born the idea for an abbreviated keepsake version of the book-with selected texts, transcriptions, and translations. This small publication sheds light on Lion Feuchtwanger's personal life and political interests. Through the words of Feuchtwanger's friends, including Albert Einstein, Max Horkheimer, and Thomas Mann, the reader learns much about the man-and about the situation of those in exile and their relationship with Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe. In addition, the booklet stresses the importance of archives and libraries in preserving historical artifacts such as the unique birthday book, and keeping alive the legacy of those represented therein.
