"A measured, thoughtful, and infinitely satisfying selection."--The Horn Book Guide "An outstanding collection. Instead of presenting more of the same literal, singsong poems for children, the editors mine the works of the last century to provide readers with a thematically arranged book of verse that they will be able to read and understand now, but will also think about for many years to come... Careful selection of writers both well- and lesser-known... Could be used as a classroom text sure to spark discussion, but could also be read with gratifying results by young people discovering poetry on their own."--School Library Journal "Some of the best 20th-century poets are represented by some of their finest poems."--The New York Times Book Review "Readers who dip in and browse will find great new poems to hold them fast."--Booklist "The book is full of discoveries, has a leitmotif of irony, and is utterly engrossing... Continues Oxford University Press's tradition of assembling the finest English language poetry."--The Boston Globe "A fine, well-rounded collection of classic and contemporary verse."--Atlanta Journal Constitution "A measured, thoughtful, and infinitely satisfying selection."--The Horn Book Guide "An outstanding collection. Reseña del editor:
A century of poetry, gathered from nearly one hundred and fifty different poets. From Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, and W.B. Yeats writing at the the beginning of the century, to John Agard, Wendy Cope, and Seamus Heaney writing today, the poems cover a wide range of subjects, themes, and emotions. The poems have been selected from poets who either wrote for children, or who wrote poems that children have found enjoyable. Michael Harrison and Christopher Stuart-Clark have edited a number of books for Oxford University Press, including The Oxford Treasury of Classic Poems, The Oxford Book of Christmas Poems, and The Oxford Treasury of Christmas Poems.
