This collection of brilliant essays by noted contemporary music critic Gene Santoro shows the full range of the American musical idiom. With jazz as his starting point, Santoro takes us from the blues of the Mississippi Bayou to Ellington to rock guitarists and finally to today's cutting edge. There are several pieces on Miles Davis, others on Ornette Coleman, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Mingus, and many more recent jazz musicians. Among the non-jazz figures featured are legendary blues singer Robert Johnson, godfather of soul James Brown, the Grateful Dead, and doyen of underground rock, Lou Reed. In its most recent pieces the book also gives powerful insights into the contemporary pop scene.
About the Author: Gene Santoro is music columnist for The Nation and covers music for The New York Daily News. He has written for The Atlantic, The Village Voice, Downbeat, and The New York Times.

Octavo (8 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's quarter black cloth with gilt lettering t spine over red boards in original pictorial jacket. As music columnist for The Nation, Gene Santoro has established himself as an important new critical voice, able to write well on a broad spectrum of popular music and jazz without losing touch with the cutting edge of today's music scene. About Nat "King" Cole, Santoro comments: "adjectives can't describe the swinging, ingratiating self-confidence laced with tenderness that colors Nat "King" Cole's singing. His baritone/tenor is so airy and elemental, so palpably physical, it invites you in, then surrounds you glowingly." And on the highly successful rock band Living Colour, Santoro is no less evocative: "hardcore metal raveups slam into bluesy ballads and psychedelicized pop, lilting Caribbean inflections collide with hiphop scrambles of prerecorded material and touches of funk." Condition: Jacket price clipped, spine lightly sunned. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers BOOKS002646
