This volume brings together work from leading researchers in the fields of developmental disorders of binocular vision, strabismus, and both infantile and acquired forms of nystagmus. It contains four sections. The first section, Basic Concepts of Stable Vision and Gaze, deals with psychophysical aspects of infantile forms of nystagmus and the relative contributions of extraocular proprioception and efference (corollary discharge). It also contains an accessible review of current notions of spatial and temporal visual functions and spatial constancy in infantile nystagmus syndrome and latent nystagmus. The second section, New Models and Techniques for Studying Gaze Stability, reviews animal and development models for strabismus, amblyopia, and nystagmus. It also contains novel optical methods for managing the visual consequences of nystagmus and a study of the potential ill effects of video displays on children's response to near viewing. The third section, New Therapies for Congenital Nystagmus, presents basic genetic studies and clinical trials of drug and surgical treatment of those patients with infantile forms of nystagmus. The final section,General Aspects of Normal and Abnormal Gaze Control, pulls together a range of contributions dealing with normal gaze control, infantile nystagmus, and acquired disorders of eye movements, including new treatment measures. This book will be a valuable resource for all scientists and practitioners interested in developmental disorders of vision.

"We now stand at the edge of a new era in CN. Many investigators are taking promising steps forward in understanding and treating CN. This volume provides them with an important forum and will form the substance of tomorrows textbooks. It helps me, the treating doctor, with a framework to understand and help these difficult patients a little better than ever before."--Lionel Kowal, MD, Director, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital "A state-of-the-science coverage of the visual and motor features of infantile nystagmus, and its management. This book also addresses the latest concepts of ocular proprioception, and provides new information about cerebellar control of eye motion and acquired nystagmus."--James A. Sharpe, MD, FRCPC, University of Toronto "This wide ranging volume on a topic that rarely if ever is treated to such in depth coverage brings up to date all we know about Infantile Nystagmus from the engineering, systems biology, neuroscience, modeling, wave form analysis to the clinical and therapeutic aspects with a generous amount of reasonable speculation where research will lead in the near term. It is a tribute to Dr. Dell'Osso's leadership in the field that it could be done at this time and by so many of the leading experts in the various fields."--John T. Flynn, MD, Harkness Eye Institute, Columbia University Medical College "This book summarizes the latest advances in nystagmus research, in 28 chapters written by 75 contributors. It is well organized, richly illustrated, and filled with up-to-date references . . . This book provides a good starting point for each topic and captures a dynamic moment in nystagmus research. It would be worth acquiring for anyone with an interest in nystagmus, eye movements, or visual perception."--Jonathan C. Horton, Visual Neuroscience (2008), 25, 70 "Leading researchers in the field of infantile nystagmus have provided an excellent update on the subject in this new volume."--American Orthoptic Journal
