Since the 1960s, the Italian altarpiece has attracted unprecedented and scholarly attention, bringing liturgical, social, and technical considerations to bear on the subject. The eight contributors to this book provide an impressive synopsis of the different approaches developed in order to enlarge and deepen our knowledge of paintings in terms of their historical functions. In nearly all the contributions there is an overwhelming concern with reconstruction, and much new material is presented concerning the historical significance of a specific category of painting. This volume is the result of an international symposium held in July 1988 at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance at Villa I Tatti in Florence.

It is organized around the purpose of the Italian altarpiece rather than the development of style. It opens with church legislation and actual practice regarding altars, particularly in the thirteenth century. Two studies follow on religious orders: one on early Sienese polyptychs made for the friars, and one on fifteenth-century Sienese painting used as spiritual propaganda. Further essays consider how the social standing of patrons shaped pictorial language in Siena, and how the Bellini and Vivarini workshops shaped the early Renaissance altarpiece in Venice. Others treat the curtains, hangings and shutters that covered sixteenth-century Lombard altarpieces, commissioning and design in central Italy from about 1450 to 1550, and contracts and iconography in the Bassano workshop.
