There is no comparable systematic treatment of the subject for any other portion of the early modern history of the Regno, and the book will be valuable to Italianists, to students of the early modern Spanish empires, and to those interested in comparative studies of government. The particular value and originality of the book lie in its thorough exploitation of the resources of the Archivo de la Corona de Aragón at Barcelona for the purposes of Italian history. Recent Italian historians have used Spanish archives for the later viceregal period of the Regno, but the exploration of Aragonese archives in Spain for its earlier history is only now getting under way, and the book under review marks a notable advance in the use of these important archives' (Peter Partner, review for Speculum, Vol. 53, No. 3, July, 1978, pp. 622-624).
