Michael Dummett was, until his retirement in 1992, Wykeham Professor of Logic at Oxford and a Fellow of New College. He has held visiting professorships at Stanford, Harvard, Minnesota, Princeton, Rockefeller, and Münster universities. He is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Nijmegen, an Honorary Docteur ès Lettres at the University of Caen, and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A previous collection of his essays was published as Frege and Other Philosophers by OUP in 1991 and sold over 1200 copies.

It contains twenty essays that have not appeared in his previous collections Truth and Other Enigmas and Frege and Other Philosophers; of these essays, three are previously unpublished, one appears here in English for the first time, and others have been difficult of access until now.
