In 1988 an important chapter in Chinese agricultural development ended, following a series of reforms which began in the later 1970s. This book provides a comprehensive summary of those developments. During the initial period of reform, levels of output, income and consumption in the countryside had increased, but from the mid-1980s, agricultural stagnation set in and by the close of the decade the agricultural sector was beset by confusion. Even the reparcelling of collective farmland, which had epitomized the reformist thrust of policy in the countryside, threatened to give way to the renewed imposition of administrative controls from above. This volume surveys different aspect of the decade of reform, while assessing its historical significance.
