The new third edition includes a chapter on the properties of amorphous solids, and discusses recent progress in such areas as basic crystal structure, superconductivity, diffraction, defects, dislocations, specific heat, phonons, thermal and electrical conductivities, and the field of solid-state studies. Many textual changes have been made to clarify certain points and short sections have been added on low-dimensional semiconducting structures and on magnetic materials. Extra problems have been added and answers to all problems are provided. The presentation is direct and to-the-point, proceeding straight to the core topics in the field.
