This work deals with the years immediately preceding the Partition of India and takes up issues of land, language, immigration, and identity in Assam, where they continue to occupy public space. The effects of the Partition continue to hang as a spectre over the entire region. He was Former National Fellow at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. His last book, <em>Indias North-East: Identity Movements, State, and Civil Society</em>, was published by OUP in 2014. <br> <br>Udayon Misra writes for several leading newspapers and contributes regularly to <em>Economic and Political Weekly</em> and <em>The Book Review</em>.<br>
