Derek Parfit is one of the leading philosophers of our time. He is a Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, Global Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at New York University, and a Fellow of the British Academy and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author of Reasons and Persons (OUP, 1984), one of the most influential books in philosophy of the last several decades.

Its six parts are arranged across two volumes. Part One develops an extended discussion of reasons and rationality, providing background for Parfit?s arguments about morality in Parts Two and Three. Those central chapters grow out of three Tanner Lectures delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, in November 2002. They address moral questions and seek to reconsider the relationship between consequentialist views, which make an act?s rightness depend solely on its overall consequences, and Kantian arguments. Part Four contains revised responses to the Berkeley lectures by Thomas Scanlon, Susan Wolf and Allen Wood, alongside a contribution from Barbara Herman, who did not take part in the Berkeley events.
