9780199733255: The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (Oxford Library of Psychology)

The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies provides a contemporary and comprehensive illustration of the wide range of evidence-based psychotherapy tools available to both clinicians and researchers. Chapters are written by the most prominent names in cognitive and behavioral theory, assessment, and treatment, and they provide valuable insights concerning the theory, development, and future directions of cognitive and behavioral interventions. Unlike other handbooks that provide a collection of intervention chapters but do not successfully tie these interventions together, the editors have designed a volume that not only takes the reader through underlying theory and philosophies inherent to a cognitive and behavioral approach, but also includes chapters regarding case formulation, requisite professional cognitive and behavioral competencies, and integration of multiculturalism into clinical practice. The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies clarifies terms present in the literature regarding cognitive and behavioral interventions and reveals the rich variety, similarities, and differences among the large number of cognitive and behavioral interventions that can be applied individually or combined to improve the lives of patients.

Review:

"This Handbook would serve as an excellent text for a graduate course on cognitive-behavioral therapy and would also be valuable for experienced clinicians wanting to know more about CBT. Master clinicians such as Cory Newman illustrate that CBT is not a dry process of telling clients to be rational but a complex clinical endeavor, and innovators such as Elizabeth Kuipers introduce readers to exciting advances in CBT such as the treatment of schizophrenia." --Dianne L. Chambless, PhD, Professor and Director of Clinical Training, Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania

"This Handbook is particularly valuable because unlike many other encyclopedic volumes attempting to summarize major approaches to mental health problems, it pays serious attention to the conceptual foundations of CBT and to explaining the growth of the field from fledgling to mainstream. A comprehensive array of approaches are thoroughly and thoughtfully reviewed, making clear that the 'cognitive' in cognitive and behavioral therapies encompasses much more than just cognitive theory, although the latter is obviously a prominent component. This is a book for readers who not only want to know how CBT treats problems, but where those approaches came from, how they got to their current status, and importantly, where they might be going." --Mark Sobell, PhD, ABPP, Professor, and Linda Sobell, PhD, ABPP, President's Distinguished Professor, Nova Southeastern University

"From conceptual foundations to cognitive and behavioral approaches for major psychological problems and populations, this excellent book covers the wide area of psychotherapy. Well written, brilliant, and complete, this Handbook, edited by Christine and Arthur Nezu, offers readers a complete picture of the cutting edge in cognitive and behavioral therapies. It will be very useful for scientists, clinicians, and students working and studying in clinical psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy." --Tullio Scrimali, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychotherapy, Medical School, University of Catania, Italy, and Founder and Director of ALETEIA International, European School of Cognitive Therapy, Enna, Italy

"The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, edited by prominent authors, editors, and psychologists Christine and Arthur Nezu, has assembled an amazing group of well-established and leading scholars to write chapters for this comprehensive and impressive volume. This well-conceptualized, organized, and expertly written book is broad in scope but detailed to a degree that students, practitioners, and researchers at all levels of experience will likely find it of benefit."
