Beginning with music fundamentals, this text covers all the topics necessary for a thorough understanding of undergraduate music theory by focusing on music in context. The text links each of the tasks that comprise a tonal theory curriculum, explicitly connecting written theory (writing and analysis), skills (singing, playing, and dictation), and music-making outside the theory class. Distinctive Features. Presents an outstanding quality, quantity, and diversity of exercises geared toward real music and real music situations. Explores not only standard four-voice harmony, but also other musical domains including melody, counterpoint, and a multitude of textures; the result is a text with applicability and relevance to all musicians. Includes almost 4,500 musical examples from the common-practice repertoire in the text and workbooks, more than 90 percent of which are on the CDs included with the text and workbooks--nearly twenty hours of music on MP3 files. All music is performed, recorded, and engineered at Eastman. PLEASE NOTE - ONLY ONE CD is included. Contents in Eight Parts: The Foundation of Tonal Music, Merging Melody and Harmony, A New Harmonic Function Phrase Model, New Chords and New Forms, Funtional Chromaticsm, Expressive Chromaticism, Large Forms Ternary Rondo Sonata, and Introduction to 19th Century Harmony.--- BOOK TWO -- 505 Pages Trade Paperback. Skills and Musicianship Workbook to Accompany The Complete Musician - An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening - 3rd Edition. No marks to any of the scores. The pages are very tight and original. The accompanying CD has been REMOVED. This workbook is devoted to musicianship skills with an emphasis on crucial skill development exercises, such as singing model progressions (through arpeggiation), extensive and varied keyboard studies, improvisation, and many types of harmonic dictation (with an emphasis on the music literature, and all are performed on the instruments designated by the composers). Each workbook chapter aligns with the corresponding chapter in the text. Within each chapter of the workbook, activities are organized by type, beginning with singing (one and two-voice), listening (dictation, correction, analysis and notation, etc.), and keyboard (including sing-and-play activities). There are more introductory-level musicianship exercises and, for the dictation activities, considerably more notational information and specific guidelines. Several new skills components are included in this edition, the most extensive of which is one- and two-voice singing excerpts. There are more than 300 new melodies, 200 of which are taken from the literature. These are organized by harmonic device (for example, in the augmented-sixths chapter, 12 examples contain that chord). The emphasis is on hearing these tunes within the context of their underlying harmonic implications. To that end, left-hand pitches (including figured-bass symbols in some cases) or chords are occasionally included to guide the student in sing-and-play activities. There are new aural exercises, such as correcting a notated melody, series of chords, or bass line based on what is heard; and there are new keyboard exercises, including easy (five-finger) harmonically oriented examples, outervoice harmonic paradigms, and creative sing-and-play activities.
